I'm finding myself more inclined to dole out mixed groups these days when capping. It tends to lessen the chance that one errant player will destroy the hopes of the entire team -- at the cost of weakening the team's effectiveness come crunch time. I'm finding myself only assigning blocks of uniform units when I know nearly everyone on the team, which is a shame. It's a problem to which I still haven't figured out the solution. In one game -- territories or ctf on Creep -- played last night, I went ahead and assigned homogeneous units to a bunch of fresh faces anyway. (I think Scrugg was on my team for this one, too.) Ended up with the lion's share of our warriors and ghols getting slaughtered because 20 of our archers were sitting in the middle of a field far away on the other side of the wall -- again, in pretty formation. Despite repeated calls, they never came, and I eventually had to detach them and drag them over myself, much too late. Afterwards, the player said s/he was keeping the troops there to give them "flexibility" in defending our flags. And while I appreciate the thought s/he had given to how best to utilize those troops, the rest of the team needed to depend on him/her backing them up when they needed it. Oh well...
